I know I’ve talked about my love for public art on this blog before. Adding murals, sculptures or installations to even the most ordinary of spaces, transforms them into places of inspiration and conversation. Public art can beautify urban landscapes, and with these pieces being accessible to everyone, they make art a part of daily life rather than only confined to Museums and galleries. So when a new project crops up in my city that brings in fresh public art, I get very very excited. Such a project has just begun to take shape here in San Diego…the new RaDD life sciences and biotech district on the San Diego Waterfront. The RaDD district is a new urban commercial project occupying 6 blocks of downtown featuring five architecturally distinct buildings, a 1.7-acre park, a pedestrian paseo, and a public art walk that will feature 18 contemporary artworks. The whole space is beautiful, but the 18 pieces of new public art is what I’m extremely excited about. The space is not 100% completed as of this post date, but some of the pieces have already become available for view. This post is #1 in a new series where I will be featuring these astounding pieces in the RaDD art walk collection. I selected a beautiful all-white fiberglass sculpture by artist Alice Aycock as the kickoff feature to this series. This piece specifically lent itself to fashion with its fabric or flower-like undulation…and I liked the challenge of making dynamic art-pairing images without the aid of the wild color I usually feature. I am excited to hear your thoughts on this new collection.
